The hostel itself is nice, but some of its services are the worst. WiFi is down most of the time, and unexpected room checks make it feel like your privacy is always at risk. Room service is often delayed too, including when you need fresh bedsheets or pillows.
We lost ₱20,000 for a stay we never got, and I still haven’t received the full refund. I’d paid in advance for two rooms at Spot On Hostel, Taguig Manila (formerly MYTOWN HongKong), for our group of 10: two other adults, two older high schoolers, and five younger high schoolers. We were in town for a nearby awarding ceremony, and the location and price had seemed right. Instead, after arriving late at night from the airport, tired, hungry, and jetlagged, we were told there was only one room left. There weren’t enough mattresses for everyone, so some of us would have had to sleep on the floor. These were students, and it was their first night in Manila. I begged them to find a solution and nearly cried, but all we got was “Sorry.” The staff were slow and disorganized, fumbling around, checking things again, and giving vague answers. They could have found the problem before we arrived and let us know. They left us to turn up exhausted and stranded in an unfamiliar city, late at night. Our family in Manila was asleep, our money was already gone, and although they promised a refund, we had nowhere to go. We had to split up. Three younger students and one adult asked the rest of our group at a hotel if they could stay there. The two older students called a friend and begged to sleep in their dormitory. I went with three younger students and one adult to a friend’s sister, who kindly took us in despite the late hour. We ended up eating at McDonald’s, exhausted and devastated. One of the younger students asked, “Are we homeless tonight?” My daughter, one of the younger students, tried calling her cousin for help, but it couldn’t undo what had happened. I’d thought the location would be convenient, and at first I ignored how sketchy and unsafe the place looked because I figured we could check in and rest, then deal with any issues in the morning. After this, I swore I’d never stay in a hostel again. I’ve never encountered such incompetence, dishonesty, poor time management, and disregard for guests. If you care about basic decency, honesty, time management, and safety, stay away. They don’t deserve anyone’s hard-earned money.
The price is affordable, so maybe that’s why I didn’t expect much. There were lots of mosquitoes and the surrounding area stank. I don’t want to sound racist, but some people there didn’t seem to have proper hygiene.
The vibe was really strange, like being in a psych ward or drunk tank. Still, paying three bucks for a comfortable bed and WiFi during my 24 hour layover in Manila was worth it. I wouldn’t stay for any other reason.
The rooms are shared, with two bunk beds, and super cheap. For that price, I can live with the flaws I ran into: mosquitoes, a leaking AC, and a bathroom sliding door that sometimes got stuck.
