Alona Vida Beach Hill

The issue was how we were treated over a supposedly missing minibar item, not the value of a Coke or anything else. We told the staff that we had taken nothing, but they didn't take our word for it. While I was gathering my things, a staff member came into the room and counted the minibar stock. She said, in part, “...we had 20 items, and we're missing a bottle, ma'am...there's always a pair of drinks...are you sure you didn't...” I immediately repeated that we hadn't taken anything. What was she implying by saying that to a guest in the room? We arrived on time for the 2:00 PM check-in, but our room wasn't ready, and staff had to rush to prepare it. Perhaps someone miscounted the minibar when hurrying to get it ready. We've travelled for nearly three months on this trip, across Southeast Asia and both North and South America over more than three decades. We know the usual checkout process, and would have disputed any unauthorized charge. Housekeeping staff should count the mini fridge inventory with guests at check-in if they're going to accuse them of taking a Coke at checkout. It's bad practice. We won't recommend this hotel, though we do suggest other guests count and photograph the mini fridge contents with staff when they arrive. We also left no housekeeping tips, which would have been four times the price of the alleged missing Coke. We liked the friendly, helpful staff, the clean comfortable room, the pool, and the tasty breakfasts, though breakfast costs extra. The hotel is small and nicely placed just off the main road, with good WiFi. Our four-night stay was enjoyable and we'd recommend it. At night, loud motorbikes occasionally disturbed us, which isn't the hotel's fault and seems common throughout the Philippines. The mattress was also firmer than we prefer.

There are plenty of restaurants right outside, and airport transfers can be arranged, so the location is handy. Our room was spacious and comfortable, the pool was great, and the staff were very friendly. Staying here is a good choice.

For our one-night visit to Alona Vida Beach, the service was what made the five stars: they let us check in early, welcomed us with drinks, and the staff were all helpful. The room was clean and spacious too, and it's only 5-10 minutes from Alona beach, close to restaurants, spas, and more.
