My partner and I booked two nights and brought our child. After the receptionist met my partner and then realized I was staying in the same room, she gave me a strange look and asked, “How many adults were in there?” I said two. We were then made to leave after one night because we had a child. Apparently children aren’t allowed, but Expedia didn’t mention that at all. She asked why I hadn’t checked the property website. If a place partners with a third-party site, shouldn’t it make sure the same rules appear there instead of expecting customers to check every site? We booked through a third party for convenience and to save time, not to get headaches and feel discriminated against. It felt like we were discriminated against for being lesbians. There were also lots of insects, and we were covered in bites after one night.

The views and thoughtful design made the room an experience by itself. We stayed in Solaris 1, at the top of Casa Solaris, with wide views over the hills and a distant beach. Seeing it as we walked in took my breath away. We could just stay in bed and enjoy the island without going anywhere. At night we stepped outside to look at the stars, showered outdoors, and heard horses whinnying. In the morning, we cooked breakfast with the provided eggs and bread and butter, with the light streaming in. The grounds were spacious and well kept, and the hillside saltwater pool has a view too. It was quiet and wonderful. I’m already trying to work out how we can get back as soon as possible.

A few practical things to know: I didn’t see any ramps, so access may be difficult for people with mobility limitations. The wooden doors swell in rainy weather, making them hard and noisy to open. It also gets a bit warm, since there’s only a ceiling fan and two mini fans. A few more lights near the parking lot would help with evening arrivals. That said, Hix Island House is a real gem for a peaceful, eco-friendly break. Being off the grid helped us connect with nature without giving up comfort. The minimalist interior was calm and uncluttered, and the open layout and balconies made the lush outdoors feel connected to the rooms. The spectacular outdoor shower was a highlight. Having a fully stocked kitchen with coffee and breakfast items made mornings easy, and the area was wonderfully quiet. I’m looking forward to returning and will recommend it to friends and family.

Carmen was wonderful. She went out of her way to make our visit special, and when we arrived early off the ferry, she made us feel at ease right away. She also helped us arrange a car, which you’ll need to get around. We were completely comfortable with the fans despite there being no A/C. We visited during the December holiday and loved how peaceful and quiet it was. There’s no food, but you can pick up basic groceries and use the great kitchen to make coffee and other things. Yoga and massages are available for a fee. Everything about the place and the experience was amazing. I’m very late writing this, but the manager and the people who take care of the property are absolute gems. Carmen, what a wonderful person. Thank you ❤️

The spot is beautiful, and I liked the concept of a place powered entirely by solar. Horses wandering around the easy-to-find compound were a lovely sight. It has a kind of glam-camping feel, and I liked the place despite the work it needs. Carmen was friendly, helpful, and quick to answer whenever we contacted her. She told us we could reach out for anything, and she was great. I expected views like the ones on the website but was disappointed. Only one of our openings had a distant ocean view; the others didn’t. We booked two rooms, both large, though the property had a run-down feel. There were several big spiderwebs in one shower. Housekeeping should have cleared them before we arrived, so we wouldn’t have to wonder whether the spiders might come back while we showered. The rooms were dark because the lights were small. They were also extremely hot, with no breeze and very small fans. One room’s sleeping area fan only worked on low, barely moving its blades, and the fan itself was too small for the room. The bed netting was a nice touch and kept bugs out, but one net didn’t fit the king bed and left gaps that lizards and spiders could get through. Breakfast provisions included eggs, frozen bread, milk, orange juice, and Special K. I would have liked fresh fruit or other choices. The pool water was turning green and the walls were green too, so we didn’t use it. The rooms felt overpriced for what was provided, and the issues seemed fixable. One safety note: the third-floor rooms aren’t really on a third floor because the house sits on a hill. If safety is a concern, this may not be the place for you. You need to leave the openings open to get air in, but the third floor is as easy to walk into as the first-floor patios. Half asleep, horses shuffling and snorting just outside could sound like danger.
