We stumbled on this place while walking along the Malecon on our first night in Vieques, and I’m so glad we stopped. We weren’t staying at the hotel, just had dinner, but the meal was so good. The blue cheese salad had really fresh romaine, just the right amount of crumbled blue cheese, and balsamic vinaigrette on the side. I appreciated that it wasn’t soggy or overloaded with dressing like salads we’d had earlier on the trip. The fish was great too: red snapper as the filet of the day and mahi mahi, both perfectly grilled and served with different kinds of rice. I’m not a big rice fan, but both were delicious. We also tried the Pampolomamosa (?), made with fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, tequila, and a splash of soda. Best cocktail we’ve had on this trip.

Room No. 8 was quiet and peaceful throughout our stay, and we especially liked the artwork on the walls. We were here while joining a bio bay tour, and the check-in and check-out instructions were clear and easy to follow. This review is for the hotel room only. We’d definitely recommend the place to friends.

The restaurant was the highlight of my Vieques stay, hands down the best food and drinks in Esperanza. I tried all the restaurants. Get the burger with bacon, and the staff were phenomenal. The rooms are modest but clean and comfortable, with a cute roomba for the sand, and the entrance to the beach is right across the street. After booking, I learned bio bay tours don’t run during full moons. I contacted trade winds, and they were incredibly accommodating: they changed my reservation dates and even offered an upgrade. Check-in is contactless. This is a modest but solid overnight option for a biobay trip, and I’d stay again for the staff and food. Thank you!

Joseph, the bartender, takes real pride in making what he considers the island’s best cocktails. He also fishes with his family, who provide most of the fresh, locally caught fish on the menu. Trade Winds Bar and Restaurant was a great experience, with a varied menu ranging from bar food and seafood to fancier dishes.

The main reason for my low rating is the bed bugs. When we left, I think all six of us had at least a hundred bites each. A few days later the itching had only gotten worse. These weren’t mosquito bites, they were far too many and too close together, and the pain was unbearable. There were also swarms of mosquitoes on the terrace, though fortunately they had bug spray by the door. Even if the food was nice and the service was good, I can’t recommend this place. It needs to be sanitized several times before people can stay without getting eaten up. Our party of six had rooms 1, 2, and 3. Room 2 was very pretty, and room 3 looked all right, but the room I slept in, room 1, was a disaster. The bathroom sink was literally coming off its hinges, so the water came out as a pathetic trickle. The shower wasn’t much better. In all three rooms, the water temperature was either ice cold or boiling hot, with nothing in between. I’d take a cold shower, then my roommate would come out yelling about burns. The location was great, but that was the best thing about this place. We didn’t feel bratty enough to make a formal complaint about the sink.
