José Estêvão Hotel

This small hotel has a warm, personal feel, with welcoming service from the moment you arrive. The rooms are nicely furnished and peaceful, and there’s room to relax in the shared areas. Its central Aveiro location is handy for exploring the canals and trying local food. A comfortable, convenient choice if you want a more authentic stay.

The rooms have been remodeled since our first visit, which was a nice surprise on our second stay. They’re comfortable and have A/C, a TV, and a private bathroom. Breakfast is the only meal served, but it’s quite decent and offers a good variety. The hotel’s location is especially convenient: the main sights are easy to reach on foot, and you can avoid tricky parking. The staff are helpful, too, and can suggest local restaurants. We had a good stay.

The price was reasonable, and the staff were friendly. Breakfast had a decent selection, too. But there were several hassles. The hotel’s outdoor parking was full, so we had to leave the car at the mall across the river, about five minutes away. Although reception was open around the clock, staff were often absent and we had to wait for someone to come back. It seemed to me they might have had just one person covering the whole hotel. Our room was tiny, with too little space to open our suitcases properly, and the air conditioning didn’t work. We stayed in late January during peak winter and were cold all night. This might suit a short summer trip better.

The central location is the one good thing, with lots nearby. The rest was really poor. Breakfast was awful, with almost nothing to choose from, and the sheets looked yellow instead of white. The receptionist was absent most of the time. The woman who handled cleaning also took care of check-in, check-out, and everything else, and she didn’t speak English. There’s an open-plan restaurant and TV lounge on the first floor, so if people are sitting there at night, you hear everything in your room and can’t sleep.
