We spent two peaceful days at Portovella after a busy stretch in Porto, staying in the deluxe bungalow at the quiet edge of the property. The views were breathtaking, and it seemed every room had the same scenery. The pool was clean and beautiful, with the river behind it. Staff were so friendly and would bring drinks poolside. Breakfast delivered to the room was a treat, with a generous range of tasty food. There aren’t many places to eat within walking distance, as we expected from our research. We drove to nearby towns both nights and found several excellent restaurants about 15 minutes away. You can also cook in the small kitchenette or order from a local restaurant. We drove 1.5 hours to Pinhão to visit wineries. It was a bit of a trek, just as we expected, so Portovella may not be the most convenient base if wine tasting is your main goal. For a peaceful getaway, though, it’s ideal.

We stayed three nights at Portovella without a car. They helped arrange a taxi and shared information about wine tours, and the service was top-notch. It’s very quiet and peaceful here. I’d come back with a vehicle next time, since the area is so hilly.

The hotel itself is nice and clean, but check-in felt inflexible and reception left me disappointed. A 3 PM check-in is reasonable, but I’ve never before been locked out of a hotel without even being allowed to wait by the garden or pool. The gate was shut in front of us, and the person on the phone was unfriendly. We had to leave and come back several times. Why couldn’t they just let us wait by the pool?

The location is good, even though it’s not in the heart of Duoro. Our room was clean and well maintained, with a nice view, and the staff were kind. But neither the air conditioner remote nor the TV remote worked. Breakfast was very poor, as you can see from the amount shown in the photo for three people. On the second day there was no hot water, and they couldn’t fix it, so we couldn’t shower.
