Refúgio das Origens

We felt at home thanks to D. Rosa, her family, and her loyal four-legged companions, Kit and King. She was always attentive and caring, and was especially sweet with the younger guests, looking after them like a grandma. The pool and outdoor area are great for families with children, too. The countryside around Refúgio das Origens makes it a lovely choice for a quiet break away from everyday life. Near Ermidas do Sado, Paragem and Café Natal serve local dishes at reasonable prices. For a visit, Largo do Chafariz has its Summer Festival in August, with food and plenty going on. There are also guided tours at the Minas do Lousal mining museum and village, including the mine and Centro de Ciência Viva. A little farther out, Lagoa de Santo André is worth the trip. We stopped for lunch at Faz-te Esperto, then finished the day with an incredible sunset and gin at Vila do Gin Black Pig.

What a disappointment, and a very unprofessional experience. After I booked through Booking, the reservation was confirmed and the payment taken from my account. I was abroad when the owner called and asked me to cancel because she only had one room available. I explained that my booking was confirmed and that I was out of the country; she said another reservation had come in. I didn't want to cancel before getting my money back, especially since I was told I would be charged for the nights if I cancelled. The owner kept insisting. The next day, she and Booking sorted it out between themselves, but I was left with no alternatives. I had to find somewhere else myself and pay an extra 300€ at short notice.

The atmosphere among the guests was really nice, and we enjoyed breakfast. Dna Rosa was wonderful and gave us useful tips on places to visit and eat, and they always lived up to expectations. The rooms were in good shape, making this a great spot for a weekend break. The pool could use better shelter from the wind, but everything else was fantastic.

Rosa and Duarte were so kind and helpful, with great advice on where to go and which local restaurants to try. The Refugio was very clean, full of thoughtful details, and peaceful, and breakfast was good too. My partner Toni and I stayed for 10 days a week ago and loved it. It’s a place we’d come back to if we wanted to explore the Alentejo area. We’d definitely return sometime, and I totally recommend it.
