The island is beautiful, and exploring it over two or three days helped lift our spirits. The apartment was spacious, which was a pleasant surprise after a bumpy start, but I can’t understand the 9.2 rating on Booking.com from 2017. There was black mold beside the bed’s headboard, which really concerned us. It seemed clean at first, but a closer look showed plenty of problems. The floor was so sticky we couldn’t walk barefoot. It felt as if cleaning products had been used, just in the wrong places. We also disliked all the artificial scents, from reed diffusers to toilet fresheners. Our apartment had no view. The supposed "piconic view" was only visible from the hidden garden, and even there a huge 5G antenna spoiled it. We’d rate the accommodation 4.9 rather than 9.2.

We stayed three nights in the renovated apartment, which had everything we needed, including air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchen, and a washing machine. From the garden, Mount Pico looked superb, though there’s also a telecom tower there now. The owner was very friendly and quick to respond when we had requests.
