The pool has a significant drop, so be careful with children. The roads up to the hotel are rural and rather narrow. The rooms are large, with an old-fashioned hotel style, and the bed is not bad. Breakfast is decent. There are only four TV channels in the rooms, which is a real nuisance if you have children.
We planned to stay one night, then ended up adding three more. Mr. Brandão is very kind and loves what he does. He’s keen to help guests explore his town and the whole Douro region. The hotel is clean, the beds are well made, and breakfast is free. He also lights a lovely fireplace each evening so guests can warm up. The view is wonderful, though the hotel is hard to find and access is difficult. That’s why he calls guests with directions for getting there. It deserves my five stars.
The villa has plenty of charm, and the staff are very pleasant. Access is difficult, especially in a large car. Breakfast, which is free, is decent. The bed was awful, though: extremely hard, at least 20 years old, and you could feel the springs. I can’t give more than two stars because it costs far too much for the comfort provided.
The setting is fantastic. The indoor and outdoor spaces could both be improved, while keeping the charm that makes a villa in the Douro special.
Guests can use the gym and pool, and it’s a 15-minute walk to the city center. The place is clean and very well maintained, the owner is attentive, and breakfast is good.
