Alfama's Flat With a National Pantheon View

I found the rooftop terrace the best part, with spectacular views across the rooftops and over the Tagus River. Inside, the immense dome and grand, solemn space give the Panteão Nacional a majestic feel. It’s a landmark rooted in Portugal’s history, with the tombs of some of the country’s greatest icons. The €14 admission felt a little steep for a visit that’s fairly quick. Still, the history and terrace views nearly make up for it. A good cultural stop if you’re short on time in Lisbon.

I used a Lisboa card to get in. The tomb isn’t worth seeing, but the view of Lisbon and the sea from the top is much better than the one from the nearby observation deck.

The National Pantheon in Lisbon is housed in the striking Church of Santa Engrácia, a building whose story is tied to an extraordinarily long construction period. Work lasted almost four centuries, and the project became a symbol of delay. The Portuguese expression “Obras de Santa Engrácia” is still used for unfinished projects. The building was completed in 1966 and repurposed as a secular mausoleum. Its vast baroque dome opens onto a restrained interior, with white walls and a polished stone floor drawing attention to the tombs. Among those commemorated are explorer Vasco da Gama and poet Luís de Camões, whose writing helped define the Age of Discovery. The Pantheon also reflects a broader view of national achievement: its crypt includes Amália Rodrigues, the Fado singer, footballer Eusébio, and Carolina Beatriz Ângelo, a pioneer of women’s rights. More than a burial place, the Pantheon reflects Portugal’s identity and its gradual effort to reckon with an imperial past while making room for a more inclusive present. Santa Engrácia turns a story of delay into a place of honor, and suggests that a nation’s legacy is always still being shaped.

The rooftop is decent, but the view isn’t especially beautiful. There are more interesting places to see in Lisbon.
