The central location meant we could walk everywhere, but our four-night stay at the Chiado apartments was a bad experience. The apartment smelled strongly of smoke, so we had to leave the windows open each day to air it out, and the bathroom smelled of urine. The shower curtain was very moldy and the shower nozzle was broken. The fridge door wouldn’t close, everything in the kitchen was sticky, and the dated furniture was in poor condition. We also found the apartment door locks tricky to operate. I wouldn’t recommend staying here.

It’s a great space with fabulous views and a good location, though we chose to eat more often in Alfama. The building is wonderful, and management gave us clear instructions and quick replies. Sadly, the apartment needs a major clean and refurbishment. It’s large but has only one bedroom, and there were stains on the furniture, a dirty coffee filter, and balcony terraces that hadn’t been attended to. The washing machine was handy but dirty too. It was also noisy, right above the Elephant bar and below the nightly rubbish truck collection.

We stayed in early July as a group of five, and it was good value for money. The apartment was spacious and clean, though the kitchen and bathrooms could use an update. The prices were decent, and I’d return if I’m back in Lisbon. It’s in the heart of the city, close to public transport and many sights on foot. The hosts were friendly, accommodating, easy to reach, and quick to answer questions.
