Nothing fancy, but everything was fine. It was just a little difficult to find, so a clearer sign on the street might help.
The host was kind and helpful, and the location is excellent. It’s a small business with a quirky entrance through a gift shop and up a fairly narrow staircase, which feels very Portugal. The place was clean, the bathroom was fine, and the kitchen and dining area were better equipped and in better shape than most hostel kitchens. The rooms are small, so if you want somewhere fancy, look elsewhere. I’d ignore the negative reviews.
The man who welcomed us was kind and pleasant, but the stay itself was disappointing. The biggest issue was the lack of soundproofing. We could hear people talking in the next room and their footsteps, as well as noise and footsteps at night from the hostel on the 2nd floor. The (red) room wasn't very clean. I don't blame the cleaning lady, since the owners haven't renovated the place. The walls were dirty, the bathroom fan was completely clogged with fluff and dust, and there wasn't enough hot water at night. If you want a hostel with a private bathroom, it might work, but not for 100 euros/ night.
We arrived, saw the room, and immediately booked somewhere else. The photos were misleading: the place looked small but clean in them, but it wasn't clean in person. The toilet kept flushing nonstop, there was a freshly patched, unpainted square on the ceiling, and the bed-head was scratched. The sheets were clean. Getting to the room meant walking through a ground-floor shop and then carrying our suitcases up the stairs, which was a bad experience for us and got worse with the luggage. We contacted the “hotel” to ask for a refund because of the misleading website pictures, but they said we hadn't shown up at all. Luckily, we had a picture as proof. My husband and I wouldn't recommend booking here if you want a central, clean, safe place suitable for a family vacation. If you don't care much about the condition of the place, you may feel differently.
The owner was so helpful and kind, and our room was genuinely quiet. I believe there was a youth hostel upstairs, and we could hear the party from the stairwell, but not a peep made it into our room. The rooms were clean, the beds comfortable, and the showers had good pressure. The location made getting around easy. The train station, 28 tram, and buses were all walkable, and getting there from the airport was simple. Bairro Alto, Praça do Comercio, and most of the main tourist spots were close by. There’s no breakfast, but a small kitchenette is available. For what we could afford, this was the best we could get. Thanks for a great trip, I’ll be back on my next visit to Lisbon.
