When the beautiful lift is closed, you can still reach the same view without buying a ticket. Go into the H&M at any level, or walk up to the street at the top floor. Take the stairs on the opposite side, turn right, and keep going up. They lead to a small terrace connected to the lift, with the same view.

Lisbon has a fascinating, rich history and plenty of sights to see. The Santa Justa Lift is one of the city's best-known landmarks, linking Baixa with Chiado. Raoul Meunier du Ponsart, a student of Gustave Eiffel, built it in 1902. The iron structure stands about 45 meters high, with a viewing platform at the top overlooking central Lisbon. It first ran on steam before being electrified. The neo-Gothic design and its place in the city make it well worth a visit. Greetings and smiles from Lisbon, Portugal.

A great way to take in Lisbon's cityscape. The morning is less crowded. You can ride the lift up and take the stairs back down by the church.

The lift was closed when I visited, so I walked up instead. From the top you get a great view over the old district, with the castle visible in the distance. I think Lisbon has better viewpoints, but the lift's architecture and history still make it worth a stop. If it's open, get there early to avoid the line.

The view over Lisbon is amazing. I went by in the afternoon and saw a huge queue, so mornings are less crowded. You can ride the lift up, then take the stairs down on the side near the church.
