Hotel Metropole

The staff were very pleasant and helpful, and the room and breakfast were nice. The location is ideal, though it’s a busy area, so there can be road noise and fans. The air-conditioning wasn’t working during our stay, which was disappointing. They offered only a free drink as compensation.

The room was clean, and the bathroom gave us no problems. We had a good view of the piazza and castle from this older hotel, which was our last stop in Portugal. The central location is a plus, but the piazza gets busy and can be noisy. Since we couldn’t control the room’s heating or cooling, we had to leave the veranda doors open during a warm week to keep the temperature below 80° at night, and only just managed it. The elevator was tiny and slow, though it worked. Breakfast was about what we’d had elsewhere on the trip.

We spent six nights at this period hotel right in the centre of Lisbon, on Rossio Square, and couldn’t fault it. The rooms were clean and good, and the cheerful staff were extremely helpful with advice and tips. They spoke perfect English. Breakfast was a fresh, plentiful buffet with an excellent selection. We’d go back at a moment’s notice.
