Fantastic location and really affordable, great value for what you pay. Bring euros because they only take cash. There's a fee-free currency exchange on the corner at the far end of the square at the bottom of the hill. My room had no air conditioning. It was uncomfortably hot during the day, though surprisingly comfortable at night, when temperatures during my stay in Lisbon were in the 90s by day and 70s at night. The biggest drawback was noisy neighbours and staff cleaning early in the morning.

I couldn't get any sleep, with loud music and deep bass outside until the early hours, thin walls that carried other guests' conversations, and people coming and going at odd times, presumably for flights or trains. The community outside was loud. The place felt unsafe. Street doors were left open, and a homeless man knew the door code when I arrived, which wasn't reassuring. I was woken twice by someone banging on my door, with no peephole to check who it was. Homelessness is a big issue in the area, though the location is convenient for the station. The corridors were dark and mouldy, with lights that didn't work. There were random holes in the walls, loose wires, and cracks in the shower tray. I cut my foot quite badly on one of the cracks. My bathroom window was clear instead of frosted and looked straight into another room a couple of metres away. The flimsy shower curtain kept blowing aside because the window wouldn't close properly. Reception was rarely open, and I saw no staff for two and a half days after the receptionist, who didn't speak English, happened to be there when I arrived. My calls, emails, and messages on booking.com all went unanswered.

We woke up after one night covered in bedbug bites. We left immediately and a pharmacy confirmed the bites, but nobody was there to take the key and they didn't answer the phone, so we had to leave it on the doorframe. The owner later cancelled our reservation after we'd stayed and paid in full, presumably to stop us reporting the bedbugs or leaving a review. We'd already contacted booking's customer service as soon as we woke up. Check-in was a mess too. We waited by the door for 30 minutes, calling without an answer, until another guest let us in. Reception was empty upstairs, so after another 15 minutes on the stairs, a guest with the same experience sent us to the laundromat down the street. We went back downstairs with all our luggage and had to find someone there to get a key and door code. No check-in or check-out directions were provided. Don't stay here.

I arrived without an entry code, so I had to wait for someone to come out before I could get inside, where I found a giant hole in the wall. There was no one at reception during my stay to complain to. The photos were false, apparently from another hotel. I'd booked a room advertised with a private bathroom, but found a shared shower instead. The mattress was rock hard, there was no air conditioning, the room doors didn't shut properly, and you could hear everything. There was mould on the skirting boards, and the floor was uneven, stained, and had old chewing gum stuck to it. I was uncomfortable walking to the accommodation, so don't walk here alone. If you want to be highly disappointed, this is the place.

DON'T STAY HERE. The location is the only good thing. We were two young sisters, and on arrival the staff denied having our reservation even though we showed photo and email proof that it was paid. They only gave us a room after we begged. The next morning, the receptionist gave our room number to a frightening man who had followed us home the night before. He knocked aggressively, and when we opened the door, he smiled and tried to force us to give him money. The receptionist laughed when we were upset and let him stay in reception to harass us. We were terrified. During our stay they also demanded an extra £50 for no reason. A day later, some expensive makeup was missing. We suspected the cleaner but let it go, thinking it was only mascara and trying to enjoy our holiday. Then after the next day's room cleaning, we found my sister's necklace, a gift from our late mother, had been stolen from a chair. She'd hidden it under a dirty bra to keep it safe. Reception was never staffed, so there was nobody to complain to or even speak with. It was horrible. Our belongings and valuables didn't feel safe, and the staff were vile. Spend another €35 and stay somewhere else. This hotel is atrocious.
