The local food is a real highlight, offering a taste of what this region does well. The area also draws plenty of visitors to see the caretos of Podence, recognized by Unesco as intangible heritage of humanity. Their age-old tradition in the streets makes this one of the country's most appealing and interesting carnivals. I definitely recommend a visit.

Podence is a small village in Macedo de Cavaleiros municipality, in Bragança district, known across the country for its caretos. These characters wear masks and brightly colored outfits, and traditionally take to the streets at carnival time. The village has a distinctive culture and rich cuisine, and Praia do Azibo is just a short distance away.
