We had a great view of the crowds from the street-facing apartment, and watching the sunrise was magical. It’s a fun insider tip. The place was much larger than I expected, very clean, and clearly recently renovated, with plenty of room for our big suitcases. The small kitchen looked well equipped, though we didn’t get to use it. The location is perfect, but that also means some street noise. The shutters helped, though they didn’t block it completely. It wasn’t an issue for me, but could bother a light sleeper. The bathroom felt a bit small, and I wished there were more shelves for my makeup bag and other things.

Our window looked across the river toward Vila Nova da Gaia, and the view was better than we’d hoped. The room was clean and spacious, with many tourist sights nearby. Since it’s so central and surrounded by restaurants, the street could be quite noisy late at night and early in the morning. It woke us on a few nights.

The balcony and windows have the kind of view poets write about, and there’s great natural light throughout the apartment. We visited in winter and worried it might feel cold because the photos made the stone building look old, but it was well insulated, had heaters, and felt cozy. The building is old stone on the outside and modern inside, right on the ribiera and within walking distance of most tourist spots. Be prepared to carry bags or strollers over the stone steps from the street to the entrance, then up another flight to the elevator. I was pleasantly surprised to find the elevator, since I’d expected to haul my luggage all the way to the fourth floor.

The facilities were nice, but we didn’t stay and booked another hotel because the place wasn’t what we expected. The heat wave made the lack of air conditioning unbearable. We also hadn’t realized it was an apartment rather than a hotel, so there was no front desk. Before arrival, they said we could leave our bags even if the room wasn’t ready. But we needed an entry code we’d never been given, so we had to call. Luckily, someone happened to be there to let us in and hand over the keys. I’m not sure what we’d have done with our luggage otherwise. It’s on a busy street, and people often sit on the step outside. They can see where the entry code is typed, which made me unsure how comfortable I’d feel about safety. I booked based on the good reviews, but the lack of AC and these other details didn’t match what we expected.
