Orbitur Vagueira

This was a pleasant, quiet one-night stop on our Spain and Portugal road trip, and rooftop tents are welcome. We paid €33.95 in July. The campsite is quite large, with rental bungalows and little teepees as well as pitches for caravans, motorhomes, and rooftop tents. There’s a pool and tennis courts, a small bar/cafe, showers, toilets, washrooms, and electric hook-ups. Kids' entertainment is available too. The beach is a drawback for us: it’s a long way off, about a 35-minute walk in a straight line that felt boring. Given where it is, I’m not sure we’d return, though we had a nice stay overall. #travelwithtentbox

Joanna and Jessica were especially lovely with the kids. My four-year-old looked forward most to their morning arts and crafts, and they had activities for different ages, plus games and inflatable bouncy castles. There was also an evening kids' disco and pool games each afternoon. My daughter was happy to spend hours in the refreshing pools. The toddler pool was an ideal depth and easy for little ones to get into, while the main pool had a very shallow section where most children could stand. We were there in August, so it was nice that the pools weren't heated. Sun loungers were plentiful for much of the day, though they got harder to find late afternoon. The basic cafe/bar by the playground covered what we needed, but had few vegetarian choices. The covered terrace was the best part of our accommodation, handy for meals, playing with my daughter, and relaxing. The accommodation was fine, and the site had the basics. I’d recommend it for families with children.

The site isn't especially pretty, just pine trees and sand, but the facilities were impressively clean and the beach is only 2.5 km away. Casa Nova is worth seeing for its striped architecture, and you might spot flamingos. Avario is also worth a visit, especially for a canal trip. There’s free motorhome parking in Avario, though I’ve heard reports of local scallywags trying to charge people to park. Not bad at all, and I’d come back if I was in the area again.

We stayed in a tent at the campsite in early September, me and my kids. It was a great visit, with a relaxed, welcoming feel and a swimming pool, among other things.
