The dinner on the terrace ended up being our favorite meal of the Douro trip. Everything from the appetizer through dessert was outstanding, and the wines and Ports were excellent too. The owner welcomed us warmly, and the house has a spectacular view over the Douro River. The setting is hard to beat. I’ll definitely come back.

The family dinner was a highlight. The food was amazing, and it was lovely sharing a table with people from all over the world. My girlfriend and I were 26 and probably the youngest there by a few decades, which made the evening feel even more special. The staff were incredibly kind, funny, and helpful. We hadn’t arranged a ride to the train station before checkout, and our host kindly asked a staff member to take us in his own car. That was a personal favor, not a service they offer, so plan your transport ahead. The house is near the Penha city center but sits up on the mountain, with lots of winding roads, so getting an Uber or Bolt can be difficult. Renting a car is probably best. The building dates back to the 1600s, but has the modern amenities you need while keeping its historic character. The property and house are immaculate, and the views are breathtaking. I’d give the staff 10000/5 and the place 500/5 if I could. It really felt magical. Don’t miss the chance to stay here.

Breakfast was a treat each morning, with fresh croissants, miniature pastéis de nata, cheeses, hams, fruit, and breads. We also had sandwiches, fresh salads, and a rich meat and cheese board during our stay, all great for a light but filling meal. We tried the three-course dinner one evening too, and it was worth it, with each dish thoughtfully prepared around local flavors. The view over the valley is what kept drawing me outside. From the house perched above it, the panorama felt magical, and I spent hours just taking it in. The grounds were tidy and green, with a welcoming pool. Our room was roomy, comfortable, and clean. Bernardo was especially friendly and ready to help, and his passion for the region came through. From the moment we arrived, the stay exceeded expectations. Casa de Casal de Loivos has become my go-to Douro Valley escape. It brings together comfort, charm, and warm hospitality in a stunning part of Portugal. I can’t wait to return.

We spent almost all our time outside, lounging on the couches or by the pool with the views and some great wine. The home’s outlook was so good we couldn’t get over it. We barely used our room except to sleep, and really enjoyed the grounds. We highly recommend staying for dinner with the other guests. Sharing a meal around one table with travelers from all over the world who love travel was a special experience.

The dinner is well worth trying. We joined twice and had a great time both times. The property itself is incredible, with a breathtaking view across the Douro region, and the hospitality is hard to match. Bernardo’s family has owned the place for generations, and he looks after it with so much care. As a Portuguese person, I’d recommend staying here to anyone wanting a Douro experience. One of the best experiences we’ve had in Portugal. We’ll definitely be back. Thank you, Bernardo and Team!
