Quinta Do Monteverde

The property is beautiful and full of antiques, with a lovely pool area, though keep an eye out for bees. There’s no AC in the rooms and no window screens, so sleeping can be hot and buggy. Don’t drink the port in reception without asking.

The meal options nearby were limited, especially for vegetarians, so I’d suggest picking up groceries and using the kitchens. We had a delicious breakfast, though. I hope to return for a few days to relax and write after my one-night stop while walking up the coast. The welcome was warm, and we were shown around the shared lounge, library, pool room, kitchen and honesty bar. Our room was comfortable and warm, with a good bed, a well-appointed bathroom, a sitting room and outdoor seating. It was a little dimly lit, though that might be welcome in midsummer when escaping the sun. The lovely buildings, walled garden to stroll through and sea view made the stay a real treat.

The pool was a favorite, and we liked the well stocked honesty bar too. You just jot down what you take on the room notepad. Our Patio room was on the small side, but comfortable and full of lovely furniture, with a roomy bathroom and modern fittings. The estate itself is gorgeous, walled and beautifully situated just a five-minute drive from the sea. Breakfast is served in the old winery, which is beautifully furnished, with fresh bread and cakes, cheeses, meat, fruit, and fresh orange juice. Dona Fatima runs the place wonderfully with Raquel and the rest of the team, who were all happy to go the extra mile for guests. We didn't try the fitness room or tennis courts. If we're back in the area, we'd stay here again.

We were sorry our plans only allowed two nights. Simon showed us around, including the games and honor bar rooms, dining hall, and pool, and was helpful throughout our stay. The breakfast was plentiful and served in a striking hall with period furniture. The grounds are spacious and beautifully kept, with stonework, greenery, and flowers everywhere. The main house is spectacular. Our two-storey apartment, with its living and dining room, full kitchen, and master suite, was a welcome change after the cozy Porto B&B. Coming through the wooden gates felt like stepping back into the 17th century, while still having 21st-century comforts.
