Sheraton Asuncion Hotel

From the rooftop pool and bar, you get sweeping views across Asunción, a lovely place to unwind. Ask for a room on a higher floor if you want the best city views, and try to catch a sunset drink up there. The hotel is also in a handy spot for exploring the “new city,” with business areas, restaurants, and major shopping malls close by, including La galleria and del Sol right next door, plus the ubiquitous pharmacies. The staff were consistently friendly, attentive, and professional, and the rooms were comfortable and in line with Sheraton standards. Breakfast downstairs was a generous buffet with plenty of variety, and the club lounge was another comfortable perk for guests with access.

I managed to cancel seven of my eight nights, and I won't be back. This place is overpriced and overrated, a sad example of how a Sheraton should not be. From the outside it looks nice, but inside it's old and partly worn out. For $200 a night, the pool bar only opens at 5, and the lobby waiters seem to disappear when they see a guest. The cramped club lounge near the closed pool bar is small and a joke. Marriott Ambassador Elite recognition was awful, practically nonexistent. There was sledgehammer noise in the lobby all day. It looks just like it did when I stayed here in 2005. In twenty years, they seem to have changed nothing except the TV, and hopefully the bed sheets. To me, this is a joke of an expensive hotel, more like a 2.5-star place hyped up by locals who don't know better. It should cost around $70.

The rooms are very comfortable, the staff are amazing, and the service is exceptional. It's conveniently set between two shopping malls with lots of restaurants and shops. The gym is small, and so is the pool, so don't bother packing for them.

The rooms are great now, after renovations were done while we were there. The work was a little annoying at the time. The location is great too.
