Right in the heart of Bucharest, Cișmigiu Gardens feels like a peaceful little escape. The English-style park and its beautiful lake made for a really relaxing walk. I also found the story behind the name interesting: it comes from the Ottoman Turkish “Çeşmeci,” meaning fountain builder, and refers to “Marele Cișmigiu,” the Chief Fountain Builder who lived here in the 18th century, when the area had two major public fountains. It’s amazing that the old name survived as this lovely green public park. A great spot for anyone into nature or history.

My kids had a great time on the little lake, especially when we had to lie down in the pedalboat to fit beneath one of the bridges 🤪. We rented one for 30min, which cost 30lei; 60 min is 50lei, and you can pay by card. There are rowboats and pedalboats to hire. The park is a lovely place for a picnic, a walk or an outing with kids, with lots of trees for shade on hot days and a few statues to look at too.

Even though Cișmigiu Garden is close to busy parts of Bucharest, it feels calm and spacious, and is clean and well kept. The broad paths, mature trees and landscaped spots make it nice for an unhurried walk or a short break. There are a few places to sit or eat, a modern playground, and a fenced dog area with activity paths further into the park. The dog space fits in well with the family-friendly feel. Statues and small monuments bring some cultural interest to the paths, and panels give information about local wildlife. The lake draws birds and looks different through the seasons. In winter there’s a skating rink that people actively use. It’s a peaceful green space for families, dog owners or anyone wanting a quiet pause in the city.

The lake and bridge are among the loveliest corners of Cișmigiu Gardens, and boats can be rented there in warmer months. With shaded paths and plenty of benches, it’s easy to take a breather from the busy streets and watch people go by. Old trees, statues and quieter corners give the park a classic, almost romantic feel, away from the urban noise. It’s nice for a slow walk, a casual date, or a coffee break, and the locals who come every day give it an authentic vibe. Some parts could use better upkeep, and depending on the season the lake and other areas may not look their best. Still, the central location and atmosphere make it worth a visit if you want greenery and a relaxing break in Bucharest.

The ponds, little bridges and birds were my favorite part of the walk. There were also plenty of places for kids to play, plus spots to sit and relax.
