Vila Maya

I paid 240 RON, about 50 EUR per night, and left feeling this place was a HOAX. I had not read the reviews beforehand. The owner advertises it on Booking as a 3 star place, but in my view it clearly isn't. I also didn't see the classification certificate displayed, although I understand it is required by law. The main problem was the owner. He came across as rude, cocky, misleading, and like a swindler taxi driver. When I raised issues and said we planned to leave a day early, he kept fooling me, then insulted me. At one point I felt intimidated. We reminded him about ANPC, and he calmed down a bit. He said leaving was the only option offered. I was asked three times to pay during the first 24 hours. It was cash only, though he did give me a receipt when I asked. Check-out was strictly at 11.00 am, as we were reminded. There was video surveillance on the way to the rooms, in case you were thinking of inviting a late night friend. The ground floor room smelled damp, mixed with room spray, and seemed to have moisture and mold somewhere. It was small, around 11 square meters, dark, and with a tiny window. The large 1.5m upper floor terrace kept the sun off the ground floor windows all day. Photos on Booking made the rooms look wider than they were, presumably with a wide angle lens. The sheets were colored instead of white like in the photos, which felt misleading. Even one star inns have clean white sheets. The floor was orange ceramic tile, though not every room has wood-like flooring. Furniture was cheap and the interior poor. I had booked a twin and specified that in the reservation. I also spoke with the owner by phone before arrival, but got a small double bed. After I checked in he disappeared and didn't answer for hours. The room had no thermal insulation, so it was hot in the day and cold at night. The printed rules said you couldn't leave the AC on when leaving the room. It was generally quiet, but there was no sound insulation. When someone moved upstairs, the whole structure sounded like it might fall apart, which felt unsafe. The room faced east but had no sea view, with large walnut trees blocking it. Mosquitoes still bit us despite the mesh. Room cleaning was not provided during the stay by default. He half-heartedly promised a TV upgrade over the phone, but there was no TV. A 3 star place without a TV?! The bathroom had the same musty smell, even with the window open throughout our stay. There wasn't hot water at all hours, it was cold in the morning and hot after noon. There was an already started roll of toilet paper, a slow shower drain in line with the water pressure, a leaking sink, and a tiny hand-operated bin. As an unexpected feature, there was a mop in the bathroom. Cool. It's at the end of the village near cornfields, about a 12 minute walk in a straight line to the beach. The 200m access route is a dark, narrow one way alley bordered by weeds, with no sidewalk, public lighting, or refuge when cars pass at night. There was an inside yard with parking space for 8 cars and video surveillance, working AC, and a refrigerator that cooled but made strange noises at night, so I unplugged it. Towels were available if you didn't have your own. The yard had a large chill area but no TV. It was generally very quiet, apart from an early morning domestic argument between the owner and another person about why they had fried his eggs without butter. The owner asked nervously several times and got no answer. Great. If dissatisfied, you might get a free coffee made by the owner. The yard and chill area seemed inactive. I only saw the ever present host, a slow moving house worker, and two other tourists. There was a shared kitchen of sorts, but you had to ask the owner. His desk and a rusty washing machine were in the same space, and I didn't see anyone but him use the kitchen. It felt more like his private area. An unhealthy, uncomfortable room, basically somewhere to keep luggage or take a shower.

The owner was verbally aggressive and very rude. It was a really bad experience, and I strongly suggest avoiding this villa.

It was very quiet and very clean. I'd strongly recommend it.

Hi, stay away from this place. The host was absolutely horrendous!
