I left and found another hostel, even though it cost just 1.5 euros more. I'd never walked out of a hostel before because it was so unhygienic. Food was left on the floor, my backpack stuck to it, and the table was sticky too. The bathroom was just as bad. One guest said he felt dirtier after showering, and that guests had cleaned the shower themselves before using it. There was also a full 200-liter bag of rubbish in the kitchen, probably there for over a day. It's cheap and the interior is nice, but basic cleaning isn't a luxury. Nikola Tesla was a germaphobe and probably would have killed himself. The reception is supposedly open 24/7, but the owner, who seems to be the only worker, slept until midday. I understand he needs sleep, but he didn't answer questions until I nudged him, while the hostel door was open. That didn't feel secure. I could have robbed the place empty without him noticing. When I asked to check in early, he just said, 'At this time? You can't,' then rolled over and went back to sleep. No hello, no apology, no request to come back later. Maybe he's nice when awake, but I didn't want to wait hours around the hostel to find out, so I packed up and left. Spending the extra couple of euros is worth it.
