OWEN R.
The water around Oravae is like a giant aquarium, full of fish, and I loved my six nights on this little island. Patson and his family are wonderful, and the stay felt almost like a homestay on an idyllic South Pacific Solomon island. My simple, authentic cottage had a deck over the water, and it was so picturesque I found it hard to leave. You can swim or snorkel straight from the deck. The food Auntie Joann and Joyce made was superb, especially the mud crab, and I enjoyed our nightly conversations. Nagarita was so helpful with whatever I needed. They took me to nearby Njari island for wonderful snorkelling on a beautiful, secluded island. I also canoed to the mainland and hiked 20-30 min up to a magnificent viewpoint of Kolombangara. It’s a simple, relaxing place rather than a luxury stay. Starlink is available near the main dining area, and the island runs on solar power, so bear that in mind if the weather is cloudy. Gizo is a 10 min boat ride away. If you want a simple, more authentic island experience away from the touristy feel, I highly recommend Oravae.
