The White brig

The courtyard with its orangery is really cute, and I’d recommend staying here. The room was clean and fresh, though I found the bed a bit soft and the pillows too high. I did enjoy the fluffy duvet. Breakfast was okay, nothing special. The staff were super friendly and made us feel welcome as soon as we arrived. That’s how a hotel should be run. I’d stay again.

The breakfast buffet had a full spread, including smoked salmon and cake, and the coffee machine made a good strong cup. We stayed on the top floor in the old administration area, with high ceilings. There’s a lift, so you don’t have to haul your bags up the old stone spiral stairs. The beds were very comfortable, and the thick walls kept the room quiet. The White Brig guest house is a fabulous, unusual place to stay, in a former prison that’s gradually being converted. You can still see the bars at the entrance to reception. Each room is different depending on which part of the prison it’s in. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful with our requests, and took a real interest in who we were, which was a nice change from an ordinary hotel.

We stayed one night in a very comfortable suite and felt welcome throughout. The staff were friendly and gave us helpful recommendations. The building is worth seeing, it was used as a prison until 1996, and you can still spot that history in parts of the hotel.

The only real downside was weak wifi in our upstairs room. Otherwise, the experience was superb. The White Brig is such an interesting building in Hudiksvall that it’s worth staying just for that. Our spacious room was tastefully decorated with beautiful antique furniture and a chandelier, and had a kitchenette and a walk-in rain shower. Breakfast was excellent, with plenty of smoked salmon and incredible pickled herring. For dinner we went to nearby Maries Kök, a restaurant with just one table and excellent food. They take orders for takeaway, so we brought ours back to the White Brig’s lovely dining room.
