The restaurant was a pleasant surprise: both the food and wine were very high quality. We tried two different starters and two different mains, and the portions were large enough that we left happy and full. It is on the expensive side, but I think the food earns the price. I’d recommend it for a weekend. The stay itself felt more like a very high-class hostel than a regular hotel, which suited us. The place is simple but newly renovated or built, and there wasn’t much to complain about. There’s no fridge in the room, so no minibar. Breakfast wasn’t huge, but it was better than at many hotels, and everything served was very good.

We went for Sunday lunch today without realizing the restaurant hasn’t been Stefan Söderholm’s since December 2024. It was a huge disappointment. Maybe we just caught a bad menu, but the slow-cooked meat dish was far too meaty, didn’t taste good, and I couldn’t finish it. The Ramslöksoppa, though, was good. The salad bar also had some strange combinations, like carrots with blue cheese, which completely spoils the vegetable. It’s sad to see Hvita Hjörten end, since it was by far the best restaurant in the area. I won’t be going back.

The hotel is close to the castle, with great views and quiet rooms. The beds were good, the food excellent, and the staff very helpful. There’s bike rental at the hotel, while parking is about 300m away. I highly recommend it.

A short guided tour was good enough to earn this place one extra star from me. I’ve visited several naturrumer in Sweden, and this one engaged me the least, perhaps because the others set a higher standard. Most of the limited space goes to the restaurant and hotel. The information boards are wordy and come across more like ads. There’s no real attempt to tell a story about anything, for example Vänern. With extra effort you might learn a little about how Vänern developed, but overall the place feels soulless.

The restaurant deserves a mention for its excellent food, made with real skill and passion. The hotel is cozy, the architecture is lovely, and the breakfast was fantastic. The view is stunning, too. Such a beautiful place.
