Morris Hotel

We had booked several days ahead, so they knew guests were arriving, but when we got to the “hotel” at noon it was completely closed and nobody answered the door. Apparently reception only works from 3pm to 6pm, just three hours, and we hadn’t been sent any codes or check-in information. I’ve never come across a hotel where you can’t leave your bags while waiting for check-in, or one that’s shut at noon when guests are expected. Luckily, we managed to cancel and book a different hotel just 100 m away.

The building is clearly old, but the furniture and decor feel new and fresh. Our room was really nice and quite big. It could have used some dusting, but otherwise it was clean and pleasant. Breakfast was lovely, and the staff were so friendly.

Check-in is only possible from 3-6pm, so keep that in mind if you can’t arrange your arrival during those hours. You can’t leave luggage at the hotel beforehand. The sign by the front door says to use a code sent in advance, but we never got one. The receptionist starts calling arrivals at 3pm sharp to give out the codes, and if you’re last on the list you might wait until 3:20 for the information. If you arrive earlier, nobody is there to answer the phone or door, so there’s no way to get in.

Breakfast was good, though it ran early, from 6.30 to 9 am. The staff were friendly and tried hard to make up for the problems with nice communication. I’d booked spontaneously through booking.com for one night, drawn in by the positive reviews, but reality was frustrating. The receptionist called to say reception closed at 6 pm and that she’d leave us the codes, but she didn’t, so we had to call her. With a child along, that was stressful. The bed was uncomfortable, there was no A/C, and street noise came through the poor curtains, making for a very uncomfortable night.
