The room, bed and linen were clean and okay, and the hotel itself was all right. But the breakfast buffet came third in Scandic's internal evaluation program for 2024, and the explanation made sense: the plates and cutlery were dirty, the tables needed cleaning, and the cleaner didn't seem motivated. This is well below the usual Scandic standard, though it is pretty far north. Being right by the E4, they could do much more business if they woke up and gave it that last push.

The coffee was awful, basically black water, and there wasn't any espresso or cappuccino made from beans. Breakfast itself was surprisingly decent. The place felt isolated, and my rather worn room had no kettle or water. The only tea in the lobby was awful Lipton, and they charged extra for it.

Breakfast was really nice. The restaurant food was less impressive: the bacon had no taste, the chicken was bland, and I found a small piece of bone in my chicken.

The breakfast was good, and the little pool was fun, but I'd gladly give up both for one proper night's sleep. Room 258 stayed around 24°C all night even though it wasn't hot outside. I asked reception, but they pointed me to the climate controls, which we'd already turned down as far as they went. The window wouldn't open, so the room became really stuffy.

There was plenty of free parking, and the walk to town and the harbour takes about 20 minutes. The location is handy for downtown Ornskoldsvik. The rooms were clean and comfortable, as you'd expect from a Scandic, and the bar and restaurant were decent, with nice food and a good breakfast. There's a sauna and a small, cold swimming pool too. My one suggestion: serve herring at breakfast. You gotta have your herring when in Sweden!
