Storebro Herrgård

The garden has lots of chairs, generous shade, and hammocks, and guests can also visit the beautifully restored rooms upstairs, furnished to evoke 19th-century grandeur. There’s a lakeside sandy beach just 40 metres from the hotel. Our host was friendly and capable. The room was spacious by European standards, thoughtfully laid out, and stayed fairly cool even as the temperature neared 30 degrees. The bathroom was almost perfectly planned, and the water pressure was excellent. Breakfast was good, though not outstanding. There’s no restaurant, but nearby Vimmerby has several.

Storebro may not be especially interesting on its own, but the manor’s location is a fascinating part of Swedish industrial history and worth visiting. Staying in the manor gave us access to all its formal rooms, and it felt like living country life in the 1800s. The old manor has been beautifully restored and has very few rooms. Our room was spacious, the beds were very comfortable, and the service was excellent. There isn’t a restaurant as such, but the friendly owner and staff still arranged dinner for us.

The food was extraordinarily tasty, definitely worth recommending. Book ahead if you can, as there are only eight double rooms. This beautiful 18th-century manor is now a hotel, with interiors carefully renovated to suggest how it might have looked in 1824.

The manor’s setting is magically beautiful, and the rooms are cosy and pleasant. Breakfast was great, and be sure to take a look upstairs. Thanks for a wonderful stay. I’d definitely recommend it if you’re going to Astrid Lindgren's World, for example.
