Hotell Helgeand Wisby

Ulrika made me feel welcome at Hotel Helgeand and in Gotland right away. As a solo traveller, I appreciated her taking time to suggest things to see and do, plus places to eat around Visby and elsewhere on Gotland. She also chatted with me each day and checked how I was enjoying myself. That personal hospitality was a lovely touch, and the staff were all so friendly. Breakfast was delicious, mostly made with fresh, locally sourced produce. There was plenty of homemade bread, cakes, jams, and granola. The hotel building itself is beautifully decorated to a high standard while still respecting its history and age. Its location is ideal for exploring Visby on foot, with lots of great restaurants nearby. I really enjoyed my stay at Hotel Helgeand. It may be my favourite hotel I’ve stayed at, and I’d recommend it to anyone visiting Gotland. I hope to return!

The rooms aren’t very big, but they’re lovely and arranged so there’s still enough space. The bathrooms are surprisingly modern and thoughtfully done for such an old building. Every time I head out, I can barely make it through the door before getting more nice suggestions for places to visit.

We booked a stay for our 41 anniversary and the medieval fair, and both turned out wonderfully. Owners Uleika and Tobias were amazing and on top of everything. The knights room was spacious and modern, with rustic touches like an original stone wall and lots of wood. Breakfast was very good, better than what I’m used to at North American hotels. They make plenty in house, and I especially liked the biscotti. There was coffee and tea available all day, so I could have biscotti before bed. I also liked that there are no dogs. I like dogs, but don’t want to share a restaurant or room with one. Everything was kept exceptionally clean. I’d highly recommend it.

The location is handy, right in the middle of the gamla stan and near domkyrkan and many kyrkoruin. Inside, the vintage decor is really well preserved and made it feel like stepping back in time. The ladies at reception were so helpful and nice, they deserve 100 points out of 5! There’s a broad tea selection too.
