ZEN Hostel Mosque Street

The bathroom and shower areas were plentiful and clean, and the room was much more spacious than I expected. The bed was clean and comfortable, and it was great value for money. The only downside was having no lift to get upstairs. Big luggage would be difficult to carry, but I guess you can’t have everything. 😆

Za'ya deserves a special thank you. Everyone was friendly and happy to answer questions. Breakfast was good, and the washroom stayed clean with hot water. The bed was roomy and comfortable, with fresh, clean sheets and pillows. The location is great too, right in Singapore Downtown and just minutes from major attractions.

The biggest issue was the noise. The first night the room was hot, the second was better, but a loud, powerful fan blows right in front of the cells all the time. I couldn't sleep without earplugs. Our cell's curtain also wouldn't close all the way, so people could see inside from the entrance. A little extra fabric would fix that. Breakfast was basically sugar: very sweet cereal or toast with sweet spreads. The kitchen is too small for everyone to sit, and food was often missing, sometimes the cereal without milk, sometimes milk without cereal, and sometimes neither. The reception guy walked by and made himself toast while the other food was gone, but didn't arrange more in a reasonable time. You have to go barefoot everywhere, including the toilets. You can imagine what that means in the men's toilets.

The room was very dark, and the bathroom was upstairs, quite a long way away. That made things less convenient, especially since the double bed in the shared room was so comfortable, with space beside it for belongings, plus a lamp and power outlet. The bathroom itself was new, comfortable, and fairly clean. Breakfast was basic but fine. One young man with round glasses, who we think worked in cleaning, made us feel really uneasy. Whenever we passed him, he stared at my friend and me without looking away until we were gone. It felt hostile. On our last day we asked if everything was okay, and he looked away right away and left. Another time in the kitchen he came to the cupboard beside us, looked at us, then slammed its door. It was scary.
