The staff were friendly and quickly found me a spot by the bar, though as a solo diner I sometimes felt overlooked beside the larger tables. I chose the restaurant because of its strong reviews, but the food wasn’t memorable: the soup was too salty, and the pasta lacked flavor. I don’t often complain in my other reviews, but this meal just didn’t stand out. At the end I was given a shot of local liqueur, which I enjoyed discovering. Maybe the kitchen was just having an off night.

The short walk here is well worth it, and the prices felt sensible, especially after Switzerland. I had the Slovenian Plate with two kinds of sausage and ribs, followed by a shared Prekmurska gibanica pudding. It was more than I could finish. At Hoṣ̌a Pod Gradom, the restaurant staff are excellent and clearly care whether you’re enjoying your meal, which matters as much to me as the food.

We went on a busy Friday evening and were welcomed like old friends. A reservation is highly recommended. The staff were warm, efficient, and happy to explain dishes or suggest Slovenian wine and craft beer pairings. There’s no pretension, just heartfelt hospitality. Hiša Pod Gradom serves authentic Slovenian food in a historic setting that avoids the tourist-trap feel. This traditional inn sits below Ljubljana Castle in a beautifully restored house dating to 1636. The rustic room, with wooden beams and soft lighting, felt like stepping into a Slovenian grandmother’s kitchen, while the smell of slow-cooked local dishes drifted from the kitchen.

The staff thoughtfully packed breakfast for us to take along when we had an early train, which was a real highlight. The property was very clean, the units spacious, and having laundry in the room was convenient. A few things could be better: the linens could be higher quality, the towels thicker, and the bathroom odor addressed. Coffee in the unit would also have been useful.
