Vila Herberstein

It’s a lovely place to have a drink on the terrace overlooking the park. The old villa is beautiful, and the staff were friendly and attentive. We came for lunch; the prices were reasonable, but the food didn’t match the setting. The dishes seemed canteen-style and lacked flavour. The fried vegetables were greasy, the bread was stale, and the chocolate soufflé was overbaked. The food wasn’t the highlight.

I was really impressed by the food I tried, the polite and friendly people, and the castle-like atmosphere. I definitely recommend this restaurant.

We were cycling around the world and stayed with you last June. We still talk about how welcome Davor made us feel. He made the whole experience so delightful and memorable. At check-in, we enjoyed a beer and wine on the bar terrace, and later he entertained us with his style and flair while sharing stories about the history on a walking tour. The elegant, delicious breakfast with him the next morning was lovely too. We hope we’ve spelled your name right! Thanks so much, Davor. We feel lucky to have met you and look forward to staying again.

The chef deserves five stars: the food was delicious, and the medium steak was perfectly cooked, tender, and full of flavour. They prepared about 25 portions at once. Portions were rather small, though. The soup serving was disgracefully small and too cold, presumably because of the service. Three stars for that. Service gets zero stars, and can’t go lower. The staff were no match for the chef and didn’t seem to know how to handle the event. They gave guests no subtle directions. Instead of serving one table at a time, they brought beef soup to every table, then vegetable soup to every table. They didn’t step aside during the speech. Worst of all, they served cake on plates that had already been used for another dessert, even when there was a used napkin on the plate. They just removed it to serve the cake. The coffee service was just as chaotic. They served by coffee type instead of by table, yelling things like “black coffee anyone?” over and over. When we asked about the wine, all they said was, “Well, we have white wine and red wine!” with no other details. I regretfully have no wish to come back. I can’t comment on the rooms.
