Grand Hotel Primavera

After a day on San Marino’s steep streets and steps, coming back to a cozy, relaxing hotel was a real pleasure. Our room was spacious and very clean, and the staff were extremely kind and helpful. The hotel feels elegant and refined and is in a great location. We stayed one night and had a wonderful time. They even surprised us with free spa access.

We weren’t welcomed warmly at the front desk, which is a poor first impression for a hotel in the hospitality business. The hotel and its amenities look beautiful, but their 3 PM to 9 PM opening hours fall when tourists are usually out. Opening at 7 AM and staying open until 11 PM would make them usable. At the current hours, they might as well be a museum, with guests left looking at closed amenities. Breakfast was good. There was no hair conditioner in the bathroom. More than half of travelers are women, and my wife shouldn’t have to go out and buy conditioner.

I liked how peaceful the hotel felt, with clean, spacious rooms, comfortable beds, and well-appointed bathrooms. It’s a stylish place with a strong sense of hospitality, a short distance from the historic center and funicula / cable car, so it works well as a base for exploring San Marino and somewhere calm to return to. The two-story spa and wellness center is a major attraction, with treatments, a sauna, Turkish bath, and a relaxation area. The indoor pool looks out over the surrounding hills, a lovely spot to unwind. After a day of sightseeing, though, the bar’s exceptional mojito was the highlight for me. It was refreshing and well balanced, and made me want to linger. The hotel also offers a wonderful dining experience.

Staff were polite, helpful, and courteous, and overall I thought the hotel was good value. You’ll need transport to get to the historical centre. We enjoyed the good quality spa and massage, with its spacious interior, pleasant outdoor area, and heated pool accessible from both indoors and outside. The food selection at breakfast was decent, and dinner was simple but good. The chef personally asked if we were satisfied, which was a thoughtful touch. The breakfast room and restaurant are quite dark, though, and would benefit from brighter lighting and a refresh. The dark yellow walls and dim corners feel uninviting. Some common areas have been redecorated, but our room hadn’t. It was a good size with a separate bathroom, but rather bare, and the bed was just mattresses without a headboard. There’s a small parking area by the entrance, a cozy fireplace in reception, and the front desk is to the left. The hotel sign is quite small. We missed it on our first approach and had to take a 2 km detour.
