Mr.Stefan went out of his way to look after us. I came to Senegal for the first time hoping to experience Teranga, and his kindness made that happen. The hosts had arranged for me to sleep at their facility on the first night, then Mr.Stefan and I agreed I'd move to Hibiscus the following day. Three people traveling with me had no accommodation, so I asked whether he could host them too. A spare room was being fixed up and wasn't meant to be ready for a couple of days, but my friends liked my room and asked if he could get a few supplies so they could rest. When we came back that night, there was a new mattress in the room, ready for them. Each morning Mr.Stefan greeted us with a smile and set out breakfast, including my favourite butter croissants. He asked about our plans, taught us bits of Wolof, and made sure the rooms were crispy clean after our long conference days. He also helped me get a ticket to see my favourite movie, Avatar. Then, just 12 hours before my flight home, I lost my purse. Two hours before I left for the airport, Mr.Stefan knocked on my door and returned it. He hadn't slept that night. He told me, “this is a movie.” My friends have lovely things to say about him too. Mr.Stefan showed us Teranga by treating his guests with real kindness and doing more than anyone asked. I fell in love with Dakar twice because of him. If you're ever in Dakar, book at Hibiscus 🌺 and tell Mr.Stefan “JEREJEF” when you leave, it means thankyou in wolof.
