Puerto Barillas Marina & Lodge

The scenery was lovely, and the property was quiet and peaceful. Having security made me feel more at ease as a tourist. The staff were 10 stars, if that were possible: friendly, helpful, and available when needed. They checked on us and called to see if we wanted to order dinner before the kitchen closed. Even though we arrived late, they were available after 10 at night and guided us into the property. We enjoyed the pool too. The drive in is rough. It’s about 45 minutes from the highway over dirt, rocks, and holes, so you may have to go 5-10 mph. I highly recommend a jeep or larger SUV. Don’t arrive at night, since it’s easy to get lost, though after driving it once in daylight you’ll know the way. We were there only a few days because of a family emergency, and spent maybe 2-3 hours a day at the property. If you want a camping kind of stay with no technology and limited amenities, and remember you’re not at the 5 star Hilton, you’ll love it. We’ll definitely return with a better equipped vehicle. Bring at least pen and paper as well as GPS. We lost signal a couple of times, so it’s useful to write down where and when to turn and how far to go. It’s easy to get lost the first time. Thanks to the staff for their hospitality!

Both tours were great: the Mangrove Kayak and Monkey walk were reasonably priced and respectful of the wildlife and fauna. Service was great too. The road in was totally fine in a small car, no worries, though it is long and simple.

Emerita and Ernesto, along with the others, made our 3-night stay wonderful. After a tiring trip through El Salvador, it was a perfect place to relax with the kids. The pool was awesome, the nature lovely, and the service great. It’s a real treasure and worth every penny, though things are pricey, from the rooms and food (bring your own) to transport if you don’t have a car. The Monkey sighting and kayak activities were great, but don’t expect much conversation from the guides. Both barely said a word on the hike and while we were on the water. Quiet people.

We came for the Sea Turtle Experience and it was amazing. Getting to the location was a bit difficult, but definitely worth it. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable.
