Golden Palm Resort

Calling it a resort feels like a stretch. It’s a small cluster of bungalows by a road, with a little cafe, but no restaurant, pool, river, pond or lawn. Our room was basic and cramped, roughly 20 square meters, with a double bed, a single bed, two lounge chairs and a coffee table. The bed was comfortable enough, and it was otherwise quiet, with no roosters, soi dogs or traffic sounds. Still, around 10 pm we got 30 minutes of loud Thai disco music from a nearby house or car. There were no restaurants nearby, and without your own transport the place feels remote. It’s about a 15 minute walk to the main road, where there are some restaurants. The lack of blackout curtains also meant an early wake-up. We didn’t think it was good value, since the same price could have got us a simple resort hotel in the center of Chiang Mai.

The owner is kind and friendly, and it’s convenient for getting around, close to the city center, market and Wat Phra That Si Chom Thong. The individual bungalows are inexpensive double rooms with most basic amenities, including air conditioning, TV and hot water. There’s no refrigerator. The grounds have trees and parking in several open areas, plus Wi-Fi, though the signal seems to be turned off late at night. Since the twin rooms share a wall, noise from loud neighbors can be disturbing. The entrance is a dirt road with small potholes, and the property sits a bit far from the main road.
