Methavalai Residence

We used to love this restaurant and have been coming for years, but the food seems to get worse every time. We came because the main restaurant is being renovated, and it feels like the chef has lost their touch. The service was already bad before the move, and it’s worse now. There were only two staff members around and we were the only table, but we still couldn’t get anyone’s attention. After three visits in a row with things going wrong, it’s hard to justify paying prices that are five times the market rate. Really disappointing.

Reception staff were helpful, and the location made it easy to explore both the old town and Khao san area. Markets, restaurants, temples, and the grand palace are all an easy walk away, with places for locals and tourists nearby too.

Methavalai Residence Hotel Check-in was friendly, helpful, and efficient, a 5/5 for that part. The location was quiet and convenient: Khao San Road is a 9-minute walk, Wat Saket Ratchawora Mahawihan is 11 minutes away, and Rajadamnern Muay Thai Stadium is 16 minutes away. There’s a 7-eleven four minutes from the hotel. Location gets 4/5. Our Superior Twin room was much less successful. The TV only had Thai channels, the shower water was cold with weak pressure, and the mattress was quite hard. The pillows were hard and lumpy enough to affect our sleep. The hotel changed them when we asked, but the replacements had the same problem. The room lighting was poor too. Room: 2/5. Wi-Fi was either painfully slow or didn’t work at all. I tried several connections and had the same issue each time, so that’s 1/5. We paid $39 per night. There’s a 1,000 THB deposit for the room key at check-in. Overall rating: 3/5.

The staff were really nice, and we came back each day to a freshly cleaned room. The rooms themselves were standard, but clean and practical. It’s tucked behind the main road, though still easy to reach. Having a spa right next door was a nice extra, and the hotel was great value.
