A good apartment.

My electricity bill was over 3,000 baht with what I’d consider normal use, so ask about the rate and how they calculate it before moving in. I also wish I’d checked the move-out terms more carefully. The contract didn’t say I had to give 30 days’ notice, but when I told the landlord I planned to, they said that wouldn’t work. Giving notice on the 15th, for example, didn’t mean I could leave on the 15th of the next month. I had to leave on a date the landlord set, like the 1st or the 30th, which stretched it to around 45 days. The landlord said they needed time to find another tenant, and I understand that, but those terms weren’t clearly stated in the contract at the start. Based on my own stay, I’d suggest checking the contract and notice period closely and clarifying all costs beforehand to avoid confusion later.

They seemed nice at first. After living here, though, I’d tell anyone thinking of moving in to think twice. They ignore problems, don’t seem to care about tenants, and push them away completely.

I felt awkward about the landlord asking tenants personal things, like questions about relationships or how a man and woman can live together. Those are private matters, and tenants are adults. Some conversations also got blunt and harsh, and tenants were sometimes joked about for their looks or skin color. It made me uncomfortable. If you’re considering staying, I’d suggest discussing the details and getting a feel for the atmosphere first.

They wouldn’t give up their parking space for tenants, and when tenants parked there, they put up a sign telling them not to. This year we also got a notice saying we couldn’t use an electric stove or frying pan, plus a 5,000 baht fine. Easy money, apparently. We’d been living here almost 3 years, yet they acted as if the bathroom ceiling should be brand new because they said they were painting it. The door was broken, and replacing it was another 2,000 baht. They claimed they’d bought a good quality door, one they hadn’t even used, heh heh. The cleaning fee was 2,000 baht, though we negotiated it down to 1,200. They’re not going to invest in anything, just pass the cost onto tenants. 5555555, bye!
