The Mustang Blu

I found the two-items-per-person rule off-putting. A restaurant should feel like a place where you choose what you actually want to eat and pay for it yourself. Instead, the sign you meet as soon as you enter made the place feel cold, as though I were a wallet taking up space for a while, rather than a guest. Even asking for one item might make more sense. I wondered if they’d kick me out for ordering only dessert. If you mostly care about getting Instagram photos, maybe you’ll enjoy this place. For people who just want to eat and have a nice time, I wouldn’t say it’s worth it.

The restaurant had a very nice atmosphere, but the perfume smell was extremely strong as soon as I walked in. I ordered four things at lunch: Submarine risotto, potato fries, iced chocolate, and molten chocolate cake. The iced chocolate was bland, almost like melted chocolate diluted with water. The risotto was hard and undercooked, and its sauce was too watery. The shellfish and squid were fine, but the shrimp smelled so fishy and seemed so undercooked that I couldn’t eat it. I had to spit it out because of the smell. The CCTV would show that I didn’t eat it. The cake wasn’t good, and I didn’t enjoy the fries either. The food quality was poor overall.

We stopped in for a cocktail and were immediately taken by Mustang Blu’s atmosphere. Inside, it felt like we’d stepped away from Bangkok’s energy and chaos into somewhere entirely different. The setting is full of character and history, unique and refined, with details that feel carefully chosen. It’s intimate and striking, timeless rather than trendy, and the sort of place that makes you slow down and take everything in. The drinks were outstanding, well balanced and expertly made with quality ingredients. You can tell there’s serious mixology skill behind them. Service was warm, professional, and attentive without getting in the way. Mustang Blu is more than somewhere to have a drink, it’s a memorable destination in its own right. Highly recommended if you’re looking for something special in Bangkok.

We picked Mustang Blu for Christmas dinner because we loved its eclectic decor and one-of-a-kind ambience. The food was pretty good, particularly the salads, which came with different kinds of edible, colorful flowers. The cocktails looked good too, though we didn’t order any. We may have chosen the wrong mains. The carbonara was too salty, and the other dish was too sweet, which was surprisingly disappointing for a restaurant in Thailand. We were told the Christmas roast chicken would take an hour, so we waited. After an hour, they said it would need another 20 to 30 minutes, and we cancelled it. They shouldn’t put dishes on the menu if they can’t deliver them within an acceptable wait.
