Lanna Thaphae Hotel

Getting two working key cards became a daily hassle. My partner and I sometimes had different plans, but staff were reluctant to give us a second card. Each morning it stopped working, and I had to explain again that we needed two. They’d say, “You already have one,” then eventually issue another. That was frustrating enough that I wouldn’t stay here again. The room was clean and housekeeping was generally okay. The beds are unusually long, which was a nice surprise for someone like me whose feet usually hang off the end. The hotel is very close to Chiang Mai’s main Tha Phae Gate, handy for walking around the Old City, but my ground-floor hallway was noisy with staff and guests. There was also an unpleasant sewer-like smell that seemed to come from the shower drain. The TV only has Thai programming, with no foreign or English-language channels, and it can’t stream services such as Netflix. Breakfast is served at another hotel around the corner, which is not far but was inconvenient after paying for it in advance. The location and clean room were positives, but the card problems, noise, limited TV, and drain odor really detracted from my stay.

My first time in Chiang Mai was a stellar experience, and this hotel was great. The staff were attentive and friendly, the rooms were clean, and it was a convenient base for getting around the city. I’d tell anyone staying in Chiang Mai to give it a try. My only suggestion would be to add a pool. Otherwise, no notes!

I used the hotel for the day because I had a late-night flight, and having reception staffed around the clock was a big help. It’s new and very clean, a bit like a Japanese business hotel. The location is handy, with plenty of places within walking distance and the night market about a 10-15 minute walk away.

The room was clean, and the reception staff were kind and helpful. They can hold your bags until check-in, which was useful. Breakfast is served in the building next door and prepared with care. I needed mine as takeaway, and they packed it very well. Great location, too, close to the night market and main streets.
