The family are nice, and the room even has a kettle. The PK place, with its shop, travel and taxi agency, is well organized, but the noise from scooter traffic is extremely annoying, almost unbearable. They give guests four plastic water bottles a day. Why not put in a water dispenser instead? The island is drowning in plastic rubbish.

PK is in a very central spot, beside a general store and the PK tour office. Mr Jes is honest and helpful, and can sort out whatever you want to do. The town is friendly, and we loved koh Muk. There are bars and restaurants close by, though most places are close in such a small town. Our room was spacious and well equipped, with a fridge, kettle, sitting area, air conditioning, fan, drying rails, and a good bathroom with a hot shower. There were plenty of tea, coffee, water, and toiletries. It was a little noisy near the road, and the bar music went on until midnight. The mattress was a bit creaky.

The hosts were kind and very helpful, explained the island, and suggested places to eat and visit. We arranged a boat trip to Kradan with them, and the snorkeling was great. The place is well located near the pier, so we didn’t need a taxi. Good value for the price, with a basic room, no fancy extras, and everything working.

We spent five nights at the colourful PK family home near the pier and village center, and had a great time. Jes and his family were attentive and helpful from the start. Jes handled our transfers to and from Koh Mook, including a lovely trip to the Emerald Cave and Koh Kradan. He gave us a hand-drawn island map with coffee spots, Southern Thai food, beaches, and scenic views, plus tips on where to look for sea cows and hermit crabs. The pier is long, so he took us to and from the guesthouse on his tuk-tuk each time. We rode the free rustic bicycles to Charlie Beach every day. It was an easy 15-20 minute ride with just a slight incline. Scooters were available for 200 baht a day, but we preferred the exercise and the more environmentally conscious choice. The mini-market was well stocked and reasonably priced, with most things we needed, including mosquito repellent and plug-ins, refills, chilled beer and wine coolers, snacks, travel-size laundry powder, and even hair ties. The room and bathroom were clean and a decent size. Housekeeping was available on request, and we were glad to have a quieter back room. Each room had a terrace with chairs and a table overlooking the small tropical garden, and there was a hose to rinse sandy feet after the beach. The bright pink or turquoise green rooms and orange building weren’t our preferred neutral colors, but the room was very functional. It had good AC, a fan, Wi-Fi, a large fridge, a shelf, plenty of hooks and hanging space, and an outdoor drying rack. Soap, shampoo, and conditioner were supplied. There was hot water for showers, though in the May heat we didn’t use it. The synthetic leopard-print blanket was too warm, but Jes kindly swapped it for a light cotton duvet. He also let us know in advance about a planned village power outage, roughly 8:45 to 17:00, so we could prepare, and brought us a large bucket of water for the interruption. The family gave us mosquito coils for the terrace and surprised us with local Thai chicken biryani breakfast rice from a street vendor on checkout morning. Such a nice gesture. Jes’s correct contact number is +66 (0) 84-098-1615. A fan on the terrace, cotton sheets instead of a synthetic blanket for hot nights, and rolling papers in the mini-market would be small improvements. Otherwise, amazing.

I had everything I needed in the room, and the price was good enough that I extended my stay. This was my favorite island in Thailand. It’s a special place where you feel like part of the community, not just a visitor passing through.
