It's a hot place to visit, and the fans don't reach every bed. Some beds have their own personal fan, which is especially useful if you're on the bottom bunk. Bring insect repellent too. Even with the mosquito nets, the bugs get active around dawn and dusk because you're by the water. The bathrooms are basic and fit the eco-friendly approach. The shower is cold, and the toilet is flushed by pouring a bucket into the bowl. The hosts are very friendly. Jip, the owner, is professional, knows the area, and helped arrange island tours and motorcycle rentals. We had proper coffee with them each morning, around 50-70 Baht depending on the order, hot or iced. Basic breakfast is available at reasonable prices. I brought Vegemite from Australia and enjoyed it on toast for 10 Baht a slice. The common area has a lovely breeze and chilled music. Bring a book, a friend, or just a happy, open attitude.

We stopped in for coffee and tea rather than staying here. Everyone was really accommodating and friendly. They even went out to get coconut milk so they could make us a vegan Thai tea. We also bought a couple of Thai decorations from the owner as keepsakes from our trip.

We stayed here in March 2016. The lounge was a cool space, with a hammock suspended over the pier, and the other guests were young and friendly. The dorm only had fans. My brother woke with a bad rash and bites on his legs, and we suspected bed bugs. The showers were dingy too. It was a decent hostel in some ways, but we moved elsewhere after the rash and bites. Your experience may vary.

The staff were lovely, really good people, and the beds were comfortable. I stayed in the single 20-bed room, which has fans rather than air conditioning. The hostel is about a minute's walk from the boat, so getting around is easy. There was a lot of exhaust from the boats nearby, and the air was bad. Everyone seemed to get a sore throat, and I felt a little ill. Keep that in mind if you're a bit soft like me.

I asked politely if they could remake a fruit juice they'd prepared with milk instead of water and ice. They refused, then things got horrible. The owner grabbed my backpack violently, dragged me, shoved me to the ground, and came very close to punching me. I managed to slip out of the backpack while I was on the floor and protect my face. The whole thing felt surreal. As I cried, he laughed and said, “nobody will believe you.” When I said I'd go to the police, he said he'd come with me, asked if I knew about the Thai mafia, and laughed while shaking his fist at me. The woman backed him up and claimed I'd been using their wifi. When I finally got away, he spat on my back, cursed at me in Thai, and shouted to everyone that I was some kind of criminal. No one nearby came to check if I was okay, and tuk-tuk drivers wouldn't take me to my hotel. A man from Austria who was leaving offered me water. Then a kind Thai woman at the pier listened, helped me find a tuk-tuk, and showed me some sympathy. There are lots of cafes and hostels in Koh Lanta, so choose carefully. Also, keep in mind that customer is never right in Thailand.
