The River Retreat Koh Mak

Such a relaxed, cool spot for winding down after a perfect day in Koh Mak. Good drinks, great vibes. Loved it.

The island is small, so it’s easy to explore on foot and find hidden spots. Our rooms were clean, and the area was quiet. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the place itself is beautiful, just two minutes from the beach, pier, and shops. We had an amazing time here.

The staff are nice and friendly, and the location is convenient, with the beach, restaurants, bars, and rentals all close enough to walk to. But the booking description is MISLEADING. We reserved a double ROOM and were given a TENT. Camping or glamping is fine as a concept, but we could have booked an actual room elsewhere for the same price. There’s nothing glamorous or enjoyable about this tent. It’s dirty inside and out, and after 7:30 in the morning the sun shines straight onto it until sunset, turning it into a sauna. The bathroom is extremely dirty, with no warm water or soap. There’s only dirt and dust on the walk back to the tent after a shower, so you get dirty again. It’s full of mosquitoes, and there’s no way to lock it. You may have to carry your belongings and equipment all day, and electronics left inside could be ruined in the scorching heat. If you value yourself, go somewhere else, or ask first if you’re really paying for a proper room.

There’s a game area here, and the atmosphere is cozy and relaxed. The staff are friendly and made us feel at home. I enjoyed the thoughtful menu of authentic Thai food, with rich local flavors and dishes that seemed prepared with care. A real gem in Koh Mak for a laid-back Thai dining experience.
