Hotel The Ramelau

The pool was the biggest disappointment. There was heavy algae on the sides and cloudy material swirling at the bottom, so the chemicals clearly seemed out of balance. I also couldn’t turn off the bathroom light, possibly the hot water heater, and it shone into the bedroom. The staff were friendly, including the ladies at the front counter, and the breakfast was okay, ordered à la carte. Airport pickup and drop-off were a big plus. The hotel is shiny and clean, though its best days seem to be behind it. With so few soft surfaces or furnishings, it reminded me of a hospital, and felt more like a basic business hotel than a tourist one. It avoids the noise and chaos of Timor Plaza hotel and the beachfront places, but the location in the neighbourhood is an odd choice. You can walk to Timor Plaza, but not to the waterfront.

I rented a conference room here, and for the price it’s one of the most affordable options in Timor-Leste, with excellent facilities. They also provide free airport pickup and drop-off. The place is clean overall, the staff are very friendly, and the restaurant meals are reasonably priced.

The hotel is pretty big, and it was clean with the amenities available. At night it felt a little creepy, though, since there weren’t many guests around. The music was really loud in the morning and afternoon, mostly pop. I understood, maybe they were playing it to break up the boredom.

I came here in 2017 and have now returned. The atmosphere feels the same.
