The location works well for getting around Tunis, and once you know the route, you can find the place on foot and have a taxi drop you at the medina's edge. The brothers running it did everything, and we also met the owner, who had lived there as a child, later became a professor in Paris, and renovated the building five years ago. Breakfast is served in the enclosed Arabic-style courtyard, which you can look down on from the second-floor balcony where all the rooms open out. It’s a tranquil oasis in the busy medina. It can be hard to locate: our airport taxi driver asked several people for directions and said he'd never heard of it in his 25 years driving. They take cash only, preferably euros, though they were happy to convert the amount to dinars for us.

The rooms and lounge spaces are beautiful, and the location is great. The two young men looking after us were terrific, always around when we needed anything and friendly throughout. They made us a delicious, filling breakfast every morning. We had an amazing stay.

My cousin and I stayed there a year ago today, and we'll always remember it as the best part of our time in Tunis. The whole staff spoiled us. Such a lovely, calm, beautiful hotel!

A calm rooftop and a relaxing courtyard, with clean rooms, great service, and a perfect breakfast, as the pictures show. It really is a tucked-away gem.
