Kayaking and snorkeling straight from our fale were a highlight, with incredible marine life all around the lodge. We also loved the views, and the dinners were much better than we expected for such a remote island. Darren and Nina and the staff made us feel very welcome, and had plenty of adventure stories to share. A wonderful place to unwind and enjoy some of the Pacific’s best waters.

A peaceful place to swim, snorkel, or just relax, with great management and staff. The channel is beautiful, though the current can feel a little scary. Keep calm and it should carry you over to Sandy Bay. I heard it’s the island’s best snorkeling spot, so I’d recommend giving it a try. Rooms book up ahead of time, so plan early if you want to stay here.

The whales are what make Matafonua Lodge unforgettable. We stayed in a comfortable fale with shared bathrooms, along a broad beachfront that runs around the bay. There’s plenty of snorkeling and marine life, too. Darren and Nina Rice are warm hosts who clearly know and love the ocean. Darren’s underwater filmmaking and drone skills help them spot whales and capture beautiful images. Lucy, George, Lily (Darren and Nina's daughter), and the rest of the team made the encounters feel easy, personal, and memorable. The Tongan staff were gracious, meals were generous and hearty, and the atmosphere felt relaxed and almost magical. A natural, personal setting for getting close to Tonga’s marine giants.

We were visiting family in Tonga and took our small family dog, barely a foot tall, to the beach beside this property. We were more than 100 yards from the property when the owners’ large, wolf-like dog ran over loose and attacked ours. The owners watched without calling their dog back right away. After it stopped, the dog went back to their deck. The man then shouted at us from there for bringing our dog to the beach. He didn’t apologize or even ask if our dog was okay. There was no sense of urgency. Their manner came across as entitled and elitist. Respect is important in Tongan culture, even when it isn’t deserved, but as Tongan-Americans we shouldn’t have to be docile in response to this kind of behavior. I expect businesses run by Westerners in Indigenous places to meet a high standard, especially when their website says, “Since the resorts opened they have always employed the majority of their staff from the local village supporting the local community wherever possible.” I can’t speak to their hiring, but this interaction gave me no sense that they care about the local community or recognize that their dog hurt ours. I’ve traveled around the world and think carefully about where I stay and spend money in Indigenous places. I’m writing about this incident because of the lack of accountability and compassion. Was it because we look local? Do we not matter? When a large dog attacks someone’s small dog, apologizing should be standard. Instead, he immediately deflected. It’s 2026. Darren and Nina, I hope your toxic, disgusting behavior toward the Tongan people you share this place with improves. A Google review may be the only way to get through, since you don’t seem self-motivated. Be better. The picture shows the deck where they yelled at us not to bring our dog to the beach.

We came ashore from our yacht, so I can’t speak to the accommodation. Darren and Nina were welcoming, informative, and extremely helpful. We spent an afternoon diving with them and received first-class treatment. The location is stunning and world-class. Highly recommended.
