I’m glad I stopped at Amara during a walk in Istanbul. The restaurant staff along the way were all trying to draw me in, and I can’t really say why I chose it. Maybe it was Vahap’s warm smile, or the mention of cocktails. Either way, it turned into one of those travel moments that’s more about feeling present in a place than just eating, and I wished I had another night to come back. I started with a piña colada, then had a fresh-tasting halloumi salad, three dips, and a huge puffed Turkish bread that could have been a meal by itself. The chicken shish kebab came after that, generously portioned and cooked just right, with gentle Turkish flavours that seemed to come from good ingredients rather than heavy seasoning. When I thought I couldn’t eat any more, they brought complimentary baklava and Turkish tea. I was only about 400 metres from my hotel, sitting there with tea and baklava as the sounds of Istanbul drifted over the cobblestones, with locals walking by and conversations around me. Some of the best travel meals are the ones you never planned.

My flight was canceled, so I had to spend a night in Byzantium/Constantinople/Istanbul, once the world's largest city. At dusk, I went for a walk and, getting hungrier as I went, ducked into a kebab place that looked busy. It turned out to be a hidden gem of a Turkish restaurant. The spicy source for the balon ekmek a was especially good, definitely my favorite, so I ordered extra. Their craft beer and bottled beer were great too.

The food was very good and everyone was so nice. I have allergies, and they’d always adjust something so I could try everything. I’d recommend this place 100%.

The pide was one of the best I’ve had, while the shisha was okay but nothing special. It was fun watching football and Formula 1 there. The prices, though, are extremely high. Similar food is easy to find for much less in Istanbul, and about one-third of this price would feel fair.

We’ve already been here twice on this vacation and would absolutely come again. The food is tasty, the prices are reasonable, and the service is friendly. Thank you, Fatih!
