I didn't know much about Istanbul when I came as a solo traveler, and Bucoleon Hostel gave me a peaceful place to stay. I was in a six-bed women's dorm, sharing with lovely people from all over, from Mexico to Italy. The old town is easy to explore from here. The kind staff, brilliant breakfast, and memorable daily events are all reasons I'd recommend it.

The mattress was so uncomfortable I could feel the springs, and the toilets had no soap, paper, or anything else. The breakfast was the cheapest sort of thing, a joke. The short guy at reception was very unfriendly. One of my worst hostel stays, definitely not recommended.

The location was great, and the pub crawl was lively. I had so many laughs here, especially at the BBQ night and belly dancing. Jay, the bartender and host, was a blast to be around and made things enjoyable for everyone. Honestly, I recommend it.

As a local Turkish guy, I'm sorry for my people and my country, but I want tourists to be careful in Sultanahmet. Istanbul is gorgeous, yet I wouldn't stay in this area or nearby places. My American friend stayed in this hostel and was kidnapped. Taxi drivers may try to charge tourists four times more, and at a restaurant he was asked for 5000 Turkish liras for a small dinner dish. I feel people there take advantage of tourists. The rooms were also dirty and old, and the photos were very different from reality. I'm trying to warn as many tourists as I can.
